The Q500 initially only came with a camera capable of recording HD, but Yuneec went on to update the camera with a 4K version.

The 4K Typhoon included Yuneec’s CGO3 4K three-axis gimbal camera. The camera could capture video in UHD resolution and slow motion in 1080p at 120fps. It could also take 12 megapixel photos. A rail attachment made it very easy to remove the camera from the quadcopter.

This meant the Typhoon’s camera could be detached and used as a handheld gimbal when attached to an accessory for the Typhoon called the CGO SteadyGrip. This powers the camera, and features a mount for mobile devices with screens up to 6.4″. It allows you to take advantage of three-axis gimbal stabilization while shooting hand-held, turning it into a device similar to the recently announced DJI OSMO.

Now Yuneec has decided to sell the camera and SteadyGrip as a stand alone package called the Typhoon Action Cam. The Action Cam features a camera pitch control on the grip handle that you can operate with your thumb, with two pitch control modes to choose from. The first is a follow mode that locks the camera in a forward facing position and the second is an angle mode that allows the camera to move around from side to side if you want to do more than just follow a subject.

You can see some images shot with the same camera and SteadyGrip in the above video.

The thing that I find very clever about this design concept is the flat bottomed base that allows you to put the camera down when you’re not using it. This is something that the DJI Osmo doesn’t come with, although it adds bulk and means the Action Camera isn’t as easy to pack away in a small bag. The Typhoon Action Camera comes in its own custom carry case and includes a charger and one rechargeable battery. Yuneec claim a battery run time of 90 minutes.

It will be interesting to see how it compares to the DJI Osmo. The Osmo has a lot of optional mounting accessories while the Typhoon Action Camera looks to only be suited for handheld use. The Osmo weighs just over 420grams with the battery while the Typhoon comes in at just under 600 grams with no battery. Both cameras feature a CMOS 1/2.3” sensor and can record not only UHD but 2.7k as well. According to the Yuneec website the Action Camera is listed as 30fps in UHD and there is no mention of 24 or 25p frame rates except when shooting in HD. This does sound quite strange and I would be very surprised if it didn’t shoot 24/25p frame rates when recording in UHD. The Osmo records MP4/MOV (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) at up to 60Mbps; there isn’t any detailed information about what bit rate the Typhoon will record at. The Osmo has a 94° FOV 20mm (35mm format equivalent) f/2.8 lens and the Typhoon a 0.6in (14mm)/f2.8 (1.4in/35mm) lens.
